A 30-year-old gold dealer, Kofi Appiah, popularly known as Kofai, has been gruesomely murdered by unknown assailants who pretended as miners at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, June 30, 2025, when some unknown miners reportedly invited the victim to a mining site under the pretense of selling gold to him.
However, upon arrival, the alleged miners attacked him with machetes, killed him, and made away with a large sum of money he had carried to purchase the gold.
His lifeless body was later discovered by some farmers passing through the area, who quickly informed friends of the deceased.
The police were subsequently notified and retrieved the body to the Police Hospital morgue in Accra for preservation and autopsy.
A close friend of the deceased, speaking to the media, recounted how Kofi Appiah had shown him unwavering support during a recent legal ordeal and had sought assistance after losing his job.
“On June 12, I was arrested by police, and he visited me while I was in cells for six days and followed my case to court. Later, after he was dismissed by his boss, he came to me for help, and I gave him GH¢2,000 last Wednesday to invest in his gold business. That was the last time I saw him, until Sunday when I got a message from him. Not long after, I heard he had been attacked and killed,” the friend narrated.
This tragic incident is said to be the fourth of its kind in the area in recent times, raising serious security concerns for individuals involved in small-scale gold trading around Asamang Tamfoe.
The police have since launched investigations into the matter and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
