Fifteen out of the twenty-three New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Eastern Region have declared their unflinching support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cautioning that replacing him as the party’s leader could set the NPP back by 16 years.
Addressing the media on behalf of his colleagues, the MP for Achiase, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, explained that their decision followed a careful assessment of Dr. Bawumia’s track record and leadership qualities.
According to the MPs, Dr. Bawumia—described as Ghana’s most impactful Vice-President—has already been well marketed and remains the party’s strongest option both politically and policy-wise.
“Having been well marketed and having served as Ghana’s most impactful vice-president, he is the best option politically and policy-wise to win this election,” one MP stated.
They further stressed: “He is a candidate who demonstrates the qualities Ghanaians want in their next leader — humility, effectiveness, and inclusiveness.
After all the propaganda against the NPP in 2024, it is becoming clearer by the day that Dr. Bawumia was right on many of the things he proposed. Changing him now will only set us back another 16 years,” Mr. Marfo said.
The MPs emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s broad appeal across demographics and regions makes him the most viable leader to return the NPP to power in 2028.
“Now is a time that more Ghanaians are warming up to this idea. Changing him will be setting ourselves back by another 16 years,” they reiterated.
The endorsement was formally announced during Dr. Bawumia’s tour of the Eastern Region, which began in Nkawkaw, the hometown of Bryan Acheampong, who is also contesting for the flagbearer position.
Among the 15 MPs backing Dr. Bawumia are Ida Adwoa Asiedu (Ayensuano), Korkor Asante (Atiwa West), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), Kofi Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South).
The rest are Akwasi Acquah (Oda), Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong (Abuakwa North), the MPs for Fanteakwa North and South, Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), Charles Asuako Owiredu (Abirem), and Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo (Achiase).
The MPs expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia is the only candidate capable of consolidating the NPP’s achievements and regaining public trust ahead of the 2028 elections.
Five aspirants are contesting the NPP flagbearership: Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The National Delegates Congress to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 Presidential Election is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026. In the event of a run-off, voting will be held on February 14, 2026.
