The Ghana Police Service has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all officers after violent clashes erupted between residents and security personnel on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The disturbances were triggered by the death of Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft. Police say he was receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital when he died.
News of his passing sparked outrage, with angry youth storming the police station and barracks at dawn. They pelted the buildings with stones, clubs, and other weapons, and attempted to set the facility ablaze. Officers on duty were forced to flee until reinforcements arrived to restore calm.
In a statement, the Eastern Regional Police Command confirmed that the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate withdrawal of personnel and closure of the station.
“Following attacks on the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region by some youth of the town, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the withdrawal of all police personnel stationed at Kukurantumi and the close down of the police station,” the release stated.
Police officials say meetings have been held with the deceased’s family and local leaders to assure them of a transparent probe. Both the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding Kena’s death.
Authorities also confirmed that video evidence from the attack is under review to track down perpetrators.
“The perpetrators will be identified, arrested and brought to justice,” the Command noted, stressing that no one would escape accountability.
Appealing for calm, Superintendent George Peprah Mills urged residents to use lawful channels to resolve disputes: “The Command would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence.”
