At least four illegal miners are feared dead following the collapse of a mining pit at Akyem Wankyi in the Akwatia Constituency on Wednesday afternoon.
The tragic incident occurred when a group of miners were reportedly working inside the pit.
A local information Center quickly announced for emergency response, prompting residents and police to rush to the scene for rescue operation.
Rescuers managed to retrieve four from the collapsed pit , but unfortunately three were reported to be dead.
The survivor was in Critical condition hence immediately transported to St. Dominic Hospital in Akwatia for emergency medical attention.
It remains unclear how many people are still trapped in the pit at the time of the collapse.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing as volunteers and police continue to dig through the debris in hopes of finding more victims.
Akyem Wankyi, which is the hometown of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, is one of many communities in the Eastern Region heavily affected by illegal mining, locally called galamsey.
