The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Ernest Kumi.
In a statement signed by Chairperson Mrs Jean Mensa on Wednesday, July 30, the Commission said the seat has become vacant and the by-election is being held in line with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended.
The EC will receive nominations from prospective candidates at its Denkyembour District Office from Monday, August 11 to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, between 9:00am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm each day.

Aspiring candidates are to download the nomination forms from the Commission’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) beginning July 30, until August 13, 2025.
Each completed nomination form must be delivered personally by the candidate or submitted on their behalf by either their proposer or seconder, and must be endorsed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, in addition to the support of 18 other registered voters from the constituency.
Candidates must also submit two passport-size photographs (bust-sized, full face, ears visible, red background) along with the completed forms in quadruplicate.

The filing fee for the by-election is GHS 10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHS 7,500.
The Electoral Commission urged the public and all interested persons to take note of the schedule and guidelines and govern themselves accordingly.
