The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the indefinite postponement of the District Assembly and Unit Committee By-Elections, which were initially scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The Commission stated that new dates will be communicated in due course.
In a statement on Wednesday, November 3, 2025, and signed by Mr. Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of the Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation Department, the EC said, “The District Assembly and Unit Committee By-Elections have been put on hold until further notice. New dates will be announced in due course.”
The by-elections were intended to fill vacancies arising from the deaths or resignations of Assembly and Unit Committee members in over 1,500 polling stations across multiple regions, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Western, and Volta.
Some of the affected districts included Ablekuma Central, Adenta, Madina, Obuasi Municipal, Bantama, Cape Coast, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Ho.
The EC had earlier opened the nomination process, allowing prospective candidates to obtain and submit forms between October 6 and October 16, 2025. Candidates vying for Unit Committee positions were required to secure endorsements from eight registered voters in their units.
The Commission advised all interested parties to stay in contact with the Returning Officers at the District Offices for further updates on the rescheduled elections.
The postponement comes as the EC seeks to ensure that the electoral process is conducted efficiently and in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by Act 940.
