Ecobank finances GH¢2.2 million in AI skills

Ecobank Ghana has announced an investment of approximately GH¢2.2 million in four educational institutions as part of its flagship initiative, Ecobank Day.

This annual event, led by the Ecobank Foundation, is designed to give back to communities across Ghana and 32 other African countries. The program highlights the bank’s commitment to social impact and community development.

During the event, Ms. Emelia Atta-Fynn, representing the Managing Director, emphasized Ecobank’s ongoing contributions to educational initiatives. Over the years, the bank has mobilized employees from various branches to engage in community development, further solidifying its role in promoting education.

Last year, Ecobank launched a three-year program titled “Transforming Africa through Education,” aimed at enhancing digital literacy for children across the continent.

The 2024 edition of Ecobank Day centres on the theme “Ignite Learning through AI,” focusing on the potential of artificial intelligence to improve literacy, numeracy, and digital skills among children. Atta-Fynn noted that AI can personalize educational experiences, making learning more accessible and effective.

“Take ChatGPT, for example, an AI tool that can provide instant feedback, personalised learning experiences, and even tutoring in various subjects. It is capable of adapting to individual learn¬ing styles, helping students grasp complex concepts at their own pace, and offering support in areas where they may struggle.”

Ms. Atta-Fynn highlighted the role of AI in democratizing education, enabling access to high-quality resources for students regardless of their backgrounds. AI can also assist teachers by managing administrative tasks and analyzing student performance, allowing them to create more engaging lesson plans. The bank’s partnership with the Ghana Code Club will provide six months of free tuition in digital skills to students, starting with Potter’s Village.

“We are investing about GH¢2.2 million in these four proj¬ects in 2024 alone,” she disclosed.

In addition to the financial investment, Ecobank is refurbishing ICT labs at several schools, equipping them with digital resources and internet connectivity. These efforts will include free tuition in subjects such as web development and robotics. The initiative represents a significant step toward equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in a technology-driven world, as articulated by Pastor Mrs. Nana Ama Adu Owusu of Potter’s Village.
