Former Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Ofori Agyeman Boadu, has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to demonstrate neutrality in his handling of recent politically charged incidents.
Mr. Boadu expressed concern over what he perceives as a biased approach by the IGP, citing inconsistencies in the police response to various threats and alleged offenses.
Mr. Boadu highlighted several incidents to support his claim of bias, drawing attention to the contrasting police responses.
He noted the swift arrest of a group of young men in Obuasi, suspected to be NDC members, who were captured in a viral video making threats of election-day violence. This contrasted, he argued, with the lack of a response to similar threats issued by NPP figures like Chairman Wuntumi and Abronye
Speaking on Morning Starr with Lily Mohammed, the former MCE specifically referenced threats made by Chairman Wuntumi against retired police officer Kofi Buakye, and statements by Abronye DC, who reportedly threatened violence against NDC members in the Bono Region.
The lack of police action in these cases, in contrast to the Obuasi arrests, suggests bias, he asserted.
“The IGP should be seen as a neutral person, I’ve seen the issuance of notices, having those boys in Obuasi arrested, and he failed to even respond to what Abronye said and he has failed to respond to what Wuntumi has said.
“The threat issued against a retired police officer, somebody he was working with not long ago. That one is not worried about, but when some element in government says any rubbish, the IGP is okay; when somebody from the NDC says the least thing, the IGP wants to act like he is Rambo.”
His comments come amidst heightened political tensions, with both the NPP and NDC exchanging accusations of plotting to manipulate the upcoming elections through violence and intimidation.
