The political atmosphere in the lead-up to the general elections is growing tense, with the two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), exchanging sharp words.
In the past 24 hours, both parties have escalated their campaigns from the political grounds to the media, issuing statements through press conferences.
The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, has issued a stern warning to the governing New Patriotic Party, threatening a “boot for boot” response if they resort to violence during the upcoming December 7 elections.
This warning follows allegations from the NPP claiming that the NDC has a grand plan to incite chaos during the elections.
In response to these claims on Starr Today hosted by Joshua Kodjo Mensah and Tutuwaa Danso, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC in charge of Operations, Mustapha Gbande, emphasized that any attempts by the NPP to spark violence will be met with a firm and resolute reaction from the opposition party.
“The NDC’s flagbearer is not a violent person, but we know that President Akufo-Addo has a vested interest in this election because Dr. Bawumia serves as a convenient candidate to cover up his administration’s wrongdoings. Whether the NDC or the NPP takes action, it is the responsibility of the security agencies to ensure order. We are heading into an election where the police are expected to protect citizens and maintain peace. I want to assure the NPP that if they supply arms to anyone, we will not respond passively.”
“The NDC will not be a casualty as we were in the 2020 elections. In 2024, I can assure you, it will be a peaceful election, one where the people of Ghana will clearly choose their next President. Ghana will not falter, Ghana will not break. We will move forward together under a government that will accommodate both the NDC and the NPP. I can guarantee that the 2024 elections will be peaceful, and His Excellency John Dramani Mahama will win with a clear mandate,” he added.
He also reiterated that the NDC is committed to defending its supporters and ensuring the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
Mr. Gbande called on the Electoral Commission and security agencies to remain neutral and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
