Flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has applauded the commitment of voters who began queuing at their polling stations at dawn in the hopes of participating in the democratic process.
He noted that the early turnout was an indication of the citizens’ interest in nurturing the country’s decades-old democracy.
In the early hours of December 7, voters were seeing arriving at their various voting centres to await Electoral Commission officials ahead of the polls scheduled to open at 7am. Some say they arrived as early as 3am to join growing queues in some parts of Accra.
Dr. Bawumia, who was speaking to reporters after casting his vote, praised voters for their commitment to the democratic process, adding that the country was better off for it.
“There is very little tension that I can see in this country. People are going to queue. In fact I gathered that from midnight last night across the country. It shows enthusiasm, and I believe that that portends well for the democracy of Ghana,” he told journalists.
The NPP leader had adorned a white smock when he showed up at the Kperiga Presby D/A Primary School in the Walewale constituency to vote.
It is the fifth time Dr. Bawumia has been on the presidential ticket of the NPP and his first as the party’s presidential candidate.
Both he and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh have cast their ballot.
