Dr. Osman Damba, the Parliamentary candidate for the Tolon Constituency has expressed concerns about the recent deployment of military personnel in the area for the ongoing 2024 general elections.
In an exclusive interview with EIB Election Hub, Dr. Damba noted his reservations about the military presence but reassured the public that the police commander’s assurances have alleviated fears. “ Upon our engagement with the police commander, he gave us the assurance that in all of this, security provision will be under the protection and guidance of the military.” He said.
According to Dr. Damba, the police have confirmed that the military will only intervene if a security threat arises, which has helped instil confidence among local voters and candidates. He stated; “ I’ve had an engagement with the military and the captain _ Captain Sampson, who is leading the process, gave me assurance that they will be very professional in their conduct. They will not come closer to the polls and they are just there to at least prevent tension.”
Dr. Damba shared his thoughts with EIB’s Noah Nash after casting his vote at the Nyankpala D/A Primary polling station. He emphasized; “ Tolon is all that we have. I Damba, works and live in Tolon. I’m an indigen from Tolon, I’m a royal from Tolon and this is all I have. Maybe my opponent coming from somewhere still have an option incase there’s no peace but I don’t have the option and definitely I’ll give the protection and that leadership to my people.”
The presence of military personnel in various constituencies across the country has sparked discussions on whether their involvement could disrupt the electoral process.
As Ghana holds its eighth general election since 1992, ensuring a peaceful and fair election remains a top priority for stakeholders across the across the country.
