The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has congratulated President-elect John Mahama on his decisive victory in the 2024 presidential elections, describing it as a strong endorsement of his vision and leadership.

In a statement dated Tuesday, December 10, UTAG highlighted Mahama’s overwhelming support, noting that his landslide win, with 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of the valid votes), reflects the trust Ghanaians have placed in him.

Mahama defeated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The statement also pointed to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary success, securing over 170 seats, including key constituencies traditionally held by the NPP. This has strengthened Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to lead the nation once again.

UTAG further congratulated Vice President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, applauding her as the first female Vice President of Ghana. “As a proud UTAG member, we celebrate your remarkable achievements, including becoming the first female Vice Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, the University of Cape Coast,” the statement read.

UTAG expressed gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his timely concession, which helped ease tension and uncertainties during the critical period.

The association also commended the Electoral Commission for its resilience, transparency, and commitment to ensuring the credibility of the elections, as well as the Elections Security Taskforce for maintaining peace and security throughout the process.

It stated, “The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) congratulates H.E. John Dramani Mahama and all Ghanaians for the peaceful elections.
Your victory, Your Excellency, is a resounding testament to the trust and confidence the Ghanaian people have in your vision, leadership, social contract and unwavering dedication to advancing the progress and prosperity of our beloved nation.”

“We also congratulate the Vice President-Elect, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; as a UTAG Member, we are incredibly proud of your achievements as the first female Vice Chancellor of a Public University (University of Cape Coast) in Ghana and, above all, the first female Vice President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana. UTAG also extends its gratitude to H.E. Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his timely concession, which played a pivotal role in easing tension and uncertainties during this critical period. This act of statesmanship is commendable and deeply appreciated.”
