The family of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has suggested to government to honour his memory by completing the new Eastern Regional hospital initiated by the previous government at Koforidua-Effiduase and name a unit or department after him.

They also want a key landmark in his hometown, Abrewankwanta, roundabout in Effiduase renamed in his honour with his statue erected.
“In my view, we have a big roundabout here which we suggest to government to erect a huge statue and name it Dr. Omane Boamah roundabout. On that road towards Akwadum, is where the new Eastern Regional Hospital is being constructed. We think a ward can be named after Dr. Omane Boamah; so, for instance, we get Dr. Omane Boamah ward because he was a medical Doctor. If these things are done, it will be a memory in his honor and his name will forever be remembered. As a family, we don’t want his name to be forgotten in Ghana.” Said Mponuahemaa of Effiduase, Nana Adusi Pokua Antwiwaa II.
The late Defence Minister, Dr.Omane Boamah died alongside seven others died in helicopter crash on August 6, 2025 while en route for a national assignment.
His sudden demise has plunged the Eastern Region and the entire nation into mourning.
At the Mponua family house of the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in Koforidua -Effiduase, a solemn atmosphere was observed on Tuesday, as relatives gathered to mourn and plan for one week observation of their illustrious son to be held in Accra on Friday.

Dr. Omane Boamah was the only son of his mother, but had other step siblings.

Family members, led by the Mponuahemaa of Effiduase, Nana Adusi Pokua Antwiwaa II, who is liaising between the family and government says they will allow the burial to take place in Accra in line with state protocol, but insist that the 40-day observance and final funeral rites must be held in Koforidua – Effiduase, his hometown.
Head of the Mponua family, Ex- Military Sergeant Isaac Folledu Omane, says the family is looking forward for a befitting burial and monument in honour of the late Dr. Omane Boamah.
Born and raised in Koforidua – Effiduase, with maternal roots in Kwahu, Dr. Omane Boamah attended Nana Kwaku Boateng, and Presby B elementary school before continuing to Pope John Secondary School and Junior Seminary, and further to other tertiary institutions in Ghana and abroad.
Former schoolmate, Anthony Awugya, who attended Presby B with Dr. Omane Boamah in 1980’s described him as a disciplined and dedicated young man, even in his early years.
“Kofi was a very quiet person. He wouldn’t involve himself in many things that we do. He was very intelligent and was always with his books. He was very disciplined” Anthony Awugya, reminisced.
