The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has called for a renewed commitment to sanitation and prudent resource management following an Independence Day cleanup exercise in Kumasi.
Speaking after the exercise, Dr. Amoakohene underscored the importance of maintaining clean environments, particularly in urban centers, as part of national development.
He acknowledged that sanitation remains a major challenge in the region but emphasized that the government and local authorities are working tirelessly to address waste management issues.
“As we celebrate our Independence Day, it is important that we also embark on activities that benefit our communities, such as this sanitation exercise,” he stated. “One of the key issues we face is waste disposal, and we must all play a role in keeping our streets and neighborhoods clean.”
Dr. Amoakohene urged residents to take personal responsibility for their surroundings, cautioning against indiscriminate dumping of waste. He noted that poor sanitation leads to several environmental and health hazards and called on businesses and individuals to support government initiatives aimed at improving waste management.
The minister also highlighted the need for financial prudence, stating that resources should be channeled into essential sectors rather than extravagant celebrations. “It is not always necessary to spend heavily on events like Independence Day when those resources can be redirected toward critical development projects,” he explained.
He further commended young people who participated in the cleanup exercise, encouraging them to embrace civic responsibility. “The youth are the future of this country, and their involvement in activities like this shows a commitment to national development,” he said.
Dr. Amoakohene concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling sanitation challenges and ensuring that Kumasi remains a clean and livable city. He encouraged continuous collaboration between authorities and residents to sustain the momentum from the Independence Day exercise.
