The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has confirmed that the newborn baby girl found abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina is in stable condition and under the care of the Department of Social Welfare.
Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the infant to ensure her safety while the Ghana Police Service investigates to locate her family.
In a statement, the Ministry said, “Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety. The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, continues investigations to identify and locate the mother or any close relatives.”
The newborn, believed to be approximately one day old, was discovered on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, by a local rabbit farmer at around 4:30 p.m.
The farmer initially thought the cries came from an animal, but upon investigation, he found the baby wrapped in a cloth and placed inside a polythene bag. He immediately raised the alarm, and nearby residents helped rescue the child.
The baby was quickly transported to Bronyibima Hospital, where medical staff confirmed she is in stable condition.
The Ministry commended the community for their swift action and appealed to the public for assistance in locating the child’s family.
“The Ministry commends community members who rescued the baby and appeals to anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigation to come forward,” the statement added.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any information to the police or contact the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope Call Centre on the toll-free lines 0800-800-800 or 0800-900-900.
The Ministry emphasized that abandoning a child is a serious violation of their rights and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of all children.
