Ghana’s Ambassador-designate to Italy, Mona Quartey, has undertaken a three-day reconnaissance tour of northern Italy as part of efforts to strengthen engagement with Ghanaian communities, academic institutions and business stakeholders in the region.
The tour, which took place from January 23 to 25, 2026, was undertaken with senior officials of the Ghana Embassy in Italy, including the Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Chancery, Kwesi Amuzu-Kpene; Investment and Tourism Officer, Kofi Bonsu; and Political and Economic Affairs Officer, Chris Ankrah. The delegation visited Udine, Monfalcone and Milan.
In Udine, the team participated in a presentation session for PhD student projects involving Ghanaian scholarship beneficiaries at the University of Udine. The engagement, facilitated by Prof. Mills Heritage, culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the University of Udine and the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana’s Volta Region. A Ghanaian PhD candidate, Ms. Francisca Adzaho, was among the students who presented their research work to the board of supervisors.

Ambassador-designate Quartey was warmly received by university officials and students, during which she delivered a brief address expressing appreciation to the university leadership and encouraging the Ghanaian scholars. She also engaged other African students on how they could collectively contribute to development efforts in Ghana and across the continent.
The delegation further held discussions with the Head of International Student Relations and faculty members on expanding the existing scholarship programme to cover additional fields, including engineering, mathematics, cybersecurity and agriculture. The meeting, arranged by Mrs. Baron of the Research Support Division of the Medical Department of the University of Udine, aligned with the Embassy’s key performance indicators on mutual economic development. The Udine visit concluded with a lunch hosted for some of the students at the university cafeteria.

From Udine, the team proceeded to Monfalcone, where they met Ghanaian workers employed at Fincantieri, a shipbuilding company. The workers were beneficiaries of technical and vocational training at the Don Bosco Institutes in Ashiaman and Sunyani in Ghana.

Ambassador-designate Quartey and Mr. Amuzu-Kpene assured the workers of the Mission’s continued support and encouraged them to engage the Embassy whenever necessary. The workers were also taken through an initial registration and data collection process by Mr. Ankrah. The visit was met with excitement, with the workers affectionately referring to Mrs. Quartey as “The People’s Ambassador.” They also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership.

The tour concluded in Milan, where the delegation met with Ghanaian and African businesspersons contributing to Ghana’s socioeconomic development. The business leaders shared their experiences, challenges and views on strengthening engagement with Ghana. Ambassador-designate Quartey and her team reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to supporting their efforts and encouraged closer collaboration with the Embassy. A brief dinner reception was held to foster dialogue and familiarity.
