The Scrabble Association of Ghana, led by President Haruna Adamu, is gearing up to host the 2025 World Scrabble Championship in Accra. The global tournament will feature two major events: the World Team Scrabble Championship and the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC), with over 25 countries expected to participate, including England, Kenya, Liberia, Ireland, Germany, and Nigeria. President Adamu also confirmed the inclusion of several Francophone countries in the competition.
In a cultural twist, the traditional opening day, usually dubbed “Early Bird,” has been renamed “Akwaaba” — a warm Ghanaian welcome to all participants. The event will also feature side attractions such as the “Sika” game.
Speaking to GHOne TV’s The Game Show, President Adamu detailed the journey to securing the hosting rights.
“Two years ago, Ghana placed 4th out of 42 countries in a Scrabble tournament in Las Vegas. One of our players ranked 8th among the best in the world — a proud moment for Ghana,” he shared.
He further revealed that Ghana’s success on the international stage earned the country a seat on the World Executive Body, marking the first time a Ghanaian has achieved this feat. Ghana won the hosting rights by defeating Thailand in a decisive 9–2 vote.
President Haruna Adamu emphasized that hosting the championship is not just a sporting milestone but also a significant opportunity to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and vibrant tourism to the world.
