The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of the Interior and the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), has announced plans to declare a nationwide Gun Amnesty Programme in the coming days to help curb the rising proliferation of illicit firearms and gun-related violence in the country.
In a statement dated October 27, 2025, NACSA expressed deep concern about the increasing number of illegal weapons in circulation, which have contributed to frequent cases of violence, including land disputes, robberies, and communal clashes.
The statement said the Interior Minister, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, is considering several policy measures aimed at addressing the situation one of which is the upcoming gun amnesty initiative.
“This will be a chance for every citizen in possession of an unregistered or illicit firearm to surrender it, walk free, and help make Ghana safer for all,” the release stated.
“No questions will be asked, no charges will be pressed during the period; just freedom and peace offered to all.”

NACSA emphasized that the programme is not intended as a witch hunt but rather as a national effort to save lives and restore peace. The Commission encouraged all citizens who may have unregistered firearms whether hidden at home, buried on farms, or kept “just in case” to prepare to hand them over once the amnesty is declared.
“When you surrender your gun, you are not giving up power; you are reclaiming peace. You are protecting lives, including your own,” the statement added.
The Commission also urged Ghanaians to spread the message within their communities to support the government’s mission of promoting peace, unity, and safety across the nation.
