The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” in connection with an alleged death threat made against Mr. Yaw Ampofo, Director-General of the National Sports Authority.
According to a press release signed by Ms. Juliana Obeng, Chief Superintendent and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region and issued on 24th August 2026 by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the 46-year-old was taken into custody following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have issued the threat.
Police stated that Okai is currently assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Command has assured the public that inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
The Command further urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information about the matter while investigations continue.
