King Charles III has called for stronger partnerships among Commonwealth countries to address the consequences of historical injustices, saying present generations must use lessons from the past to create better opportunities for the future.

The monarch said collaboration in education, employment, trade and climate resilience could help disadvantaged communities overcome hardship and improve their living conditions.

He made the call on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, while addressing leaders at the opening of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.

Reflecting on the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, King Charles III said his engagement with the subject had strengthened his commitment to finding practical ways for Commonwealth countries to work together.

“The more I have furthered my own understanding of the issues through listening, learning, and looking, the more committed I have become to finding ways for us to work in modern partnership to address the wrongs of the past with action for the future,” he said.

He identified improved access to education, investment in jobs and opportunities, increased intra-Commonwealth trade and climate resilience as areas where cooperation could make a difference.

“Through improving access to education, investing in jobs and opportunities, encouraging inter-commonwealth trade, and inspiring vital climate resilience measures across the world, I have always felt that there is so much that can be done to help lift up those who struggle against hardship and disadvantage,” the King stated.

He said he had consistently sought to contribute to efforts aimed at supporting disadvantaged communities, using a sailing analogy to illustrate the importance of responding constructively to circumstances inherited from the past.

“For as any sailor navigating the seas knows, we cannot command the winds, least of all where the winds of yesterday have delivered us, but we can choose how we set our sails,” he said.

The monarch also argued that the Commonwealth’s relevance should be measured by how it responds to present-day global challenges rather than solely by its historical origins.

“The Commonwealth of today is not merely a product of the past, it is a response to the world of today,” he said.

“Its vocation is more compelling than ever.”

King Charles III’s remarks come amid growing calls from Caribbean governments and reparations advocates for Britain to acknowledge its role in the transatlantic slave trade and engage in meaningful discussions on reparatory justice.

While the King acknowledged the historical suffering and expressed what he described as profound personal sorrow, he did not announce a formal apology or reparations package in the address.

His comments nevertheless placed education, economic opportunities, trade and climate resilience at the centre of his proposed approach to building stronger Commonwealth partnerships.

The 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda brings together leaders of member states to discuss cooperation and shared challenges facing the organisation and the wider world.
