The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video in which an American citizen, Arianna Naomi Mackey, alleged she was kidnapped and robbed by individuals she claimed were police officers.
According to a statement by the Police on Tuesday, December 9, preliminary investigations revealed that Ms. Mackey and two companions had checked out of their hotel in Accra and left Ghana on December 5.
Police contacted her to assist with the investigation, but she reportedly said she could not provide the names of the alleged officers or the number plate of the vehicle involved.
The Police noted that Ms. Mackey also declined to provide the contact details of a friend who was reportedly with her at the time, stating that her friend “does not want to be involved in the investigation.”
She later deleted the video and blocked police investigators on WhatsApp, making further contact attempts unsuccessful.
Efforts are ongoing to secure her cooperation through diplomatic channels.
Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer for the CID, emphasized that “the Ghana Police Service treats such allegations very seriously and remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case.”
