Ghana has highlighted its digital transformation gains at the United Nations, calling for stronger international cooperation to advance universal connectivity, digital public infrastructure and equitable governance of artificial intelligence.
Addressing the UN General Assembly during the WSIS+20 Review, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, outlined key digital systems that are driving efficiency and transparency in public service delivery.
“Ghana continues to advance digital public infrastructure, including the Ghana.gov platform, the Ghana Electronic Procurement System, the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System, the National Health Information Exchange and the Ghana Health Information Management System,” he said.
According to the Minister, these platforms are improving access to public services while strengthening accountability across government.
“These initiatives promote efficiency, transparency and equitable access to public services,” he noted.
Mr. George also pointed to ongoing efforts to secure Ghana’s digital ecosystem, stressing the importance of public trust in technology.
“To foster trust in the digital ecosystem, Ghana has strengthened its cybersecurity and data protection frameworks and operationalised national and sectoral computer emergency response teams,” he said.
Digital inclusion, he added, remains a core pillar of Ghana’s development strategy, particularly for women, youth and underserved communities.
“Through nationwide digital literacy campaigns, community information centres, the One Million Coders programme and the Girls in ICT initiative, Ghana is expanding digital skills and empowering women, youth and underserved communities to participate effectively in the digital economy,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Minister urged deeper global cooperation as the World Summit on the Information Society process enters its next phase.
“We call for strengthened commitments to universal connectivity, robust digital public infrastructure, equitable AI governance and increased capacity building support for developing countries,” he stated.
He concluded by reaffirming Ghana’s readiness to work with global partners under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
