President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana and Togo will co-sponsor a high-level event on reparative justice at the 2025 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The initiative, he said, aims to bolster global efforts toward reparations for Africans and people of African descent.
Speaking at the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, President Mahama stated, “It is important to highlight that Ghana and Togo will co-sponsor a high-level event on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025 to further bolster efforts achieving the justice and the closure which has eluded us for centuries.”
He called on African Union (AU) member states and stakeholders to fully participate in the event, which forms part of the continent’s broader push for reparative justice.
“As we do more to correct historical wrongs where we are setting our full humanity, we are reaffirming our sovereignty, we are reigniting the flame of dignity that has always burned within the African soul,” he said.

The announcement comes as Africa intensifies its reparations agenda through strategic partnerships, including the AU–CARICOM Joint Mechanism and the upcoming AU–CARICOM Summit scheduled for September 2025 in Addis Ababa.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading the continent’s voice on justice and accountability. “You can count on the support of Ghana in this collaborative agenda for the Africa we all want,” he concluded.
