Ghana’s United Nations Association (GUNA) has expressed alarm about the increasing environmental damage brought on by illicit mining, or “galamsey.”
GUNA called for prompt action from all parties to address the problem and emphasized the serious ecological and public health effects of the unlawful mining operations in a press statement.
GUNA claims that “galamsey” has grown to be a serious threat to Ghana’s economy, public health, and environment. Despite government and civil society efforts to stop the illicit practice, galamsey still destroys vast tracts of productive land, contaminates waterways, and threatens the livelihoods of countless Ghanaians.
GUNA urged all stakeholders, government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to work together to tackle this issue.
“The Ghana United Nations Association calls on all stakeholders, including the government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society, and the private sector, to take urgent and coordinated action to address this crisis.
“We urge the following measures:
“Strengthen Law Enforcement: The government must intensify efforts to enforce existing environmental laws and regulations, prosecute offenders, and dismantle the networks that enable illegal mining operations.
“Promote Sustainable Mining Practices: We advocate for the promotion of legal and sustainable mining practices that protect the environment while contributing to the economy. This includes supporting small-scale miners in obtaining licenses and adhering to environmentally friendly practices,” the press release said.
GUNA emphasized that galamsey’s environmental harm is a disaster that jeopardizes Ghana’s future as a whole, not merely a national issue.
The association reiterated its dedication to assisting initiatives that seek to end illicit mining and advance sustainable development throughout the nation.
“We believe that through collaborative and decisive action, we can protect our environment and ensure a healthier and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians.”
