Health professional, Dr. Michael Coffey has raised alarm over the growing use of aphrodisiacs among young people in Ghana, warning that the trend could have serious long-term health consequences if left unchecked.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Dr. Coffey cited recent studies conducted by KNUST and the University of Ghana showing widespread use of aphrodisiacs among individuals aged 20 to 24. “
Study showed that 66.4% of youth are using aphrodisiacs, and the age range was between 20 to 24 years,” he revealed.
He explained that many young men turn to these products due to societal pressure and misconceptions linking sexual stamina to masculinity. “They think that if I’m able to go more than one hour, that makes me a man. So that’s what society has imprinted on their minds,” Dr. Coffey stated.
Dr. Coffey noted that some young men misuse prescribed erectile dysfunction drugs even when they have no medical condition requiring such treatment.
He also warned that early and prolonged use of these substances can lead to dependency and future sexual dysfunction.
He further highlighted that some women are using unregulated products for body enhancement, a practice associated with significant health risks.
Dr. Coffey called for stronger public education campaigns to combat misinformation about sexual performance and encourage healthier attitudes toward intimacy.
