The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has secured six new bauxite mining leases, marking a significant step toward unlocking the country’s full aluminium potential.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, during the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
According to the Minister, the new leases were finalised in June 2025 and are currently awaiting ratification by Parliament.
“These leases aim to strengthen Ghana’s control over its bauxite resources and accelerate extraction to two million metric tonnes per annum,” Hon. Buah stated.

The move is in line with GIADEC’s revised strategic plan under President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” agenda, which seeks to establish the country as a global player in the integrated aluminium industry.

To support this goal, GIADEC is also exploring strategic partnerships for the development of new bauxite mines and supporting infrastructure, including a 250km railway line for bauxite transport, expansion of the Takoradi Port, and enhancements to the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO).
The Minister emphasised that the strategy aims to ensure long-term value creation for the nation while maintaining financial sustainability and commercial independence for GIADEC.
