The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on journalists covering the re-run of elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
At an emergency press conference held on Friday, July 11, 2025, GJA President Albert Dwumfour described the incident as an attack on press freedom and democracy, demanding an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the matter.
This comes after a journalist with the EIB Network, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, was reportedly assaulted by a police officer while covering the parliamentary election rerun on Friday. The officer, identified as Adentan Divisional Commander Lumor, allegedly attacked Banahene during his coverage for GHOne TV. Other journalists were also reportedly assaulted by security personnel and political hooligans during the electoral process.
In a swift response, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted the officer captured in a viral video assaulting the journalist during the Ablekuma North election rerun.
“The GJA will ensure justice is served to journalists assaulted by these hooligans. Such acts of violence against media practitioners have no place in our democratic process,” Mr Dwumfour emphasised.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is supervising the rerun in 19 polling stations across the constituency to resolve verification challenges that plagued the December 2024 general elections. Results from 18 of the 37 initially disputed polling stations had already been certified, leaving the remaining 19 for a fresh vote.
