GNAFF to Dr. Tenkorang: Apologise to Health Minister within 24hrs over ‘disrespectful’ comments

GNAFF has given GRNMA Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum 24 hours to apologise for his “disrespectful” remarks against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and farmers.

The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has strongly rebuked comments made by Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Ghanaian farmers.

Dr. Tenkorang-Twum, reacting to the violent incident at Ridge Hospital, slammed the Health Minister, asserting that his background as a farmer made him unfit to appreciate hospital operations.

His remarks, however, triggered widespread criticism from the public, youth groups, and professional bodies, many describing them as unnecessary, disrespectful, and unprofessional.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 22, GNAFF described the remarks as “derogatory and unprovoked attacks” not only on the Health Minister but also on farmers and fishermen, who it stressed remain the backbone of Ghana’s food security and economy.

“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security, and economic survival. It is therefore highly disheartening, discourteous, and unacceptable for such a venerable group to be subjected to public ridicule in this manner,” the statement read.

The association further demanded that Dr. Tenkorang-Twum retract his comments and issue an unqualified apology within 24 hours.

Failure to do so, GNAFF warned, would compel it to take “appropriate steps” to defend the dignity of its members.

The Ridge Hospital incident that sparked the controversy involved relatives of an accident victim who allegedly assaulted a nurse following delays in treatment, forcing police intervention. Minister Akandoh later visited the hospital to condemn the assault and pledged improved security at health facilities.

GNAFF urged the public to show greater respect for farmers and fishermen, insisting their sacrifices remain crucial to the nation’s survival.
