The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned traders and shop owners to follow proper stock management and safety protocols after a fire broke out at Madina Zongo Junction.

The blaze affected several shops but was swiftly contained, preventing injuries and limiting damage to neighbouring businesses.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, January 22, GNFS Public Relations Officer D02 Desmond Ackah highlighted the role of shop practices in fire risk.

“If you have a shop, there is a demarcated area that you have to sell. Why do you extend it and bring some of your waste outside?” he asked, urging owners to avoid turning retail spaces into storage areas.

Ackah advised traders to use separate warehouses for excess stock rather than overstocking their shops, noting that improper storage and poor ventilation can lead to spontaneous fires.

He also praised the public for reporting emergencies quickly, emphasizing that timely calls are critical in preventing widespread damage.

“Time is of essence in an emergency situation. So for every critical fire, if you wait for more than six minutes before you call us, the impact or the distraction will be greater,” he said.

The GNFS continues to investigate the cause of the fire but caused no fatalities.
