Private legal practitioner Kwame Jantuah has warned against the indiscriminate sale and encroachment of government lands, describing the situation as “worrying” and calling for stricter enforcement of land laws.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Mr. Jantuah said, “It shouldn’t happen. Government lands shouldn’t be sold the way we have handled it over the years.”
He questioned whether Ghanaians respect existing land laws, noting that many build indiscriminately, assuming they will not face consequences.
He commended current efforts by the relevant ministry but cautioned against politicisation or inconsistent implementation.
“If it’s one of those things where you announce it, you start doing it for a while and then all of a sudden somebody from above puts his hands in it and says stop it, I don’t think that would work,” he said.
Mr. Jantuah also raised concerns about land guards and the sense of entitlement some citizens display toward government property. “We feel that whatever is government’s we are entitled to. And it is wrong,” he stressed.
He urged successive governments, regardless of political affiliation, to maintain genuine efforts to protect state lands. “It’s a national issue. Political parties should work together collectively to make sure that some of these things stop,” he added.
