The Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Decentralisation, Ahmed Ibrahim, says government is moving to strengthen the Bus Rapid Transit system known as “Ayalolo” with the planned acquisition of 200 new buses through a European grant support arrangement.
He made the disclosure during the Government Accountability Series, noting that the project is being supported through cooperation with the Government of Spain.
“As I speak to you, the new MD started with a Spanish grant and we gave the letter to the Minister for Finance in November 2025,” he said.
According to him, the process had experienced delays but has now advanced following key approvals from the Finance Ministry and the Spanish Embassy.
“And you know that was the first year of the Minister, so he was too busy. So the Ambassador was on us,” he added.

He explained that the arrangement involves feasibility studies which will pave the way for the procurement of the buses.
“So that is what we have done for Ayalolo. But when you compare the transport system in Ghana, Ayalolo is the best,” he said.
He further argued that despite operational challenges, the BRT system has performed better compared to other public transport services.
“In the coming days… about 200 new buses will be brought to augment Ayalolo. And that is what we are all working for,” he stated.
