Gov’t vows to curb terrorism, pirate attacks

Government says it will continue to put in place measures to ensure the citizenry is safe from the activities of terrorists and pirates which are becoming a concern in the sub-region.

According to Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who addressed a press briefing over Sunday, the growing activities of terrorists and pirates in neighbouring Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Mali dominated a recently held cabinet retreat.

He stressed that government will continue to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.

“Another incident that took over this cabinet retreat is the growing incidence of terrorism and piracy along our borders and the kind of challenge that it begins to potent for us here in Ghana.

“If you have followed what is going on in the West African sub-region, the incidents of terrorism and piracy are on the increase and literally every day they are drawing closer south which means closer to our borders here in the republic of Ghana.”

He indicated that “the government will wish to assure citizens that it will continue to take all appropriate measures to ensure that Ghana is protected from increasing risks of terrorists activity and piracy that is always coming closer to our borders.”

In the last few months, countries that share borders with Ghana, including Burkina Faso and Cote ‘D Ivoire, have experienced terrorist attacks with the most recent one in Burkina Faso.

“And then to our south, the Gulf Of Guniea is also getting inundated with piracy attacks and it puts us in a pretty difficult situation. Just to recap, two Spanish journalists and an Irish journalist were abducted and killed near a reserve in eastern Burkina Fase, 26th April 2021,” he added.
