Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has announced that the government will no longer cover the travel expenses for supporters attending international tournaments, a decision likely to face opposition from some fan groups.
Ghana has financed the travel of supporters to major competitions over the years, especially to support the Black Stars. However, this practice has increasingly faced criticism due to its financial burden.
During the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the government is reported to have spent around $3 million, part of which went toward accommodation, meals, and travel expenses for supporters.
In an interview on StarrChat with Bola Ray, the Sports Minister stressed the need to cut down expenditure and protect public funds.
“I don’t think that government must spend money to fly fans to tournaments. We can bring corporates to send supporters, but not government money,” Adams stated.
He reaffirmed his unwavering support for the national team, adding that should Ghana win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he would ensure the entire squad is flown first-class on a nationwide tour to celebrate the historic victory in every district.
His comments come amid growing optimism among fans that the Black Stars will qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with many anticipating government backing to travel and support the team during the tournament.
