The Ghana Union of Traders Association,Eastern Regional branch has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family of Constance Nayarko, popularly known as Yaayaa, a Ghanaian trader who was killed in a terrorist attack in Titao, Northern Burkina Faso.

According to the association, the incident has highlighted the dangers traders face when they travel outside Ghana to purchase goods such as tomatoes, onions, peppers, and other produce in large quantities throughout the year.

Speaking to the media at the family house in Koforidua, the Vice Chairman of the Eastern Regional GUTA, Mr. Samuel Victor Aikins, urged the government to expand irrigation facilities in farming communities to ensure that the country produces enough vegetables locally.

“If we have enough production here, we will not need to travel to other dangerous places to import these goods. It will also help revive local tomato factories and create employment opportunities for our people,” he stated.

He emphasized that improving local production would not only reduce the risks associated with cross-border trade but also strengthen the national economy.

Mr. Aikins suggested that developing local dams and irrigation projects would support farming activities and ensure a steady supply of raw materials for processing factories.

The association expressed concern that, despite repeated appeals to successive governments, little progress has been made.

“We have been saying this to all the presidents who have come into office. They promise to act, but we hope this time the promise will be fulfilled.”

GUTA however called for enhanced security on major highways to protect traders and facilitate smooth trade within the sub-region.

The association noted that improved road security would support regional trade agreements under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ECOWAS frameworks.

The family head, Mr. Akore Patrick, also expressed gratitude to GUTA and announced that the funeral date has not yet been confirmed.
