Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as an inspirational figure whose legacy in women’s empowerment will endure for generations.
In a statement issued on Friday, the former President expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Rawlings, who died on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
“My wife Rebecca and I are deeply saddened by the news of the untimely passing of the wife of the late first President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, the longest serving First Lady in our history and the Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, H.E. Mrs Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings,” Akufo-Addo said.
He noted that Mrs. Rawlings was more than a political figure — she was a beacon of strength and progress for Ghanaian women.
“As a role model for women in Ghana and across Africa, Mrs. Rawlings’ gender advocacy and women empowerment initiatives remain impactful to this day. Her commitment to the growth of the women’s movement in Ghana and Africa can never be forgotten,” he added.
The former President fondly remembered Mrs. Rawlings as a “warm and affectionate woman, with a good sense of humour and excellent company,” extending condolences to her children and family.
Born in Cape Coast on November 17, 1948, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings became one of Ghana’s most influential women through her pioneering work with the 31st December Women’s Movement and her two-decade tenure as First Lady from 1981 to 2001.
She is survived by four children — Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi Rawlings.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the former First Lady, directing that flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
