Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has recounted a terrifying armed attack on his vehicle during an official trip to the Upper East Region, describing it as a near-death experience that highlighted the personal risks of public service.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Tuesday, January 20, Dr. Adutwum said the attack happened while he was returning from Bolgatanga after a scheduled engagement on the Free Senior High School policy fell through.
“At around 5pm, I was coming down past Tamale when I saw armed men by the roadside shooting at my vehicle. I may not be sitting here if not for divine providence.”
Dr. Adutwum explained that the assailants fired multiple shots at both the area of the vehicle where he was seated and the tyres, forcing his driver to manoeuvre wildly in a bid to escape.
“They were shooting at where I sat. They were shooting at the tyres,” he said.
“My driver was going left and right, left and right.
By the time the vehicle reached the nearest police station, the tyres had been completely destroyed by the gunfire. There were bullets in my car,” he added.
Reflecting on the harrowing ordeal, the former minister said it underscored the sacrifices sometimes demanded of public officials.
“I have served this country so well that I almost sacrificed my life. If you are talking about sacrifice, I almost got the ultimate sacrifice.”
