The Assistant Commissioner of Police (rtd), Dr. Benjamin Agordzo stated that the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) attempted to take his phone in order to erase all records which could have aided in his acquittal.
Dr. Agordzo was arrested and detained on counts of allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. ACP Benjamin Agordzo, the late Dr. Mac Palm, and eight others were arraigned in 2021 on counts of conspiracy to commit high treason.
However, Dr. Benjamin Agordzo has been freed. This was after he was found not guilty for the charge of abetment after a full trial.
Six others including military officers who were part of those facing trial were however found guilty for their respective roles and sentenced to death by hanging.
In an interview on the Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey the retired police officer announced the impending launch of a book detailing his experience whilst in detention.
He explained that his book brought to light misdemeanors within the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and even the Court System.
“I wrote about court procedures, some of which breach fundamental human rights.”
Though a detailed encounter with the law enforcement agencies lies within the book, Dr. Benjamin Agordzo did not spare to give snippets of the book’s contents.
He disclosed how being a police officer with over 35 years of service benefited him.
He was able to stand his ground with the help of good lawyers and question some of the unreasonable practices being carried out by the National Investigation Bureau adding that one of such was the seizure of his phone.
Mr. Agordzo claimed that once an incarcerated person’s phone was placed in the custody of the Bureau, all contents that could have been useful in acquitting the person would be erased, leaving the accused with no evidence of his innocence.
“The NIB seizes personal items and flushes all records to accuse you. I resisted the attempt to take my phone. If you are not very vigilant and alert, you could go to prison as an innocent person.”
The retired police officer also stated that unruly prosecutors could be the course of one’s incarceration.
“Our justice delivery system makes it easier to send innocent people to jail. The prosecution team easily concocts stories.”
