I’ll complete Mahama’s uncompleted housing projects – Atta Akyea

The Minister-designate for Works and Housing Samuel Atta Akyea has promised to complete housing projects started under the erstwhile Mahama administration.

The Abuakwa South MP says he will also suggest to the Akufo-Addo government that the old housing projects are completed before new ones are tackled.

“I laud the NDC government for tackling parts of Presidents Kufuor’s housing project…I will carry through with the constitutional requirements that projects started by previous governments are continued and  completed by succeeding the government .

“I will even push further to suggest that we do not start new projects until these old ones are completed,” he told the Appointments Committee of Parliament Tuesday when he appeared for his vetting.

Mr. Atta Akyea also noted that he will provide the conducive environment for private entities to enter the housing industry and succeed in the ultimate objective of providing affordable housing for Ghanaians.

He however urged local banks to provide long term mortgage arrangement for workers in order to make it convenient for Ghanaians to own homes.

Ghana currently has over 1.7 million housing deficit.

The Mahama administration is credited for its efforts to reduce the housing deficit with the inauguration of a 1,500 housing units at Ningo in the Greater Accra region in 2016.

The objective of the Affordable Housing Project was to provide 5,000 housing units for low and middle income earners in the country.
