A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Asah Asante has said the former Trade Minister, Mr. Alan Kyerematen cannot win as an independent candidate in the 2024 election.
There have been speculations that the former presidential aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen is considering going independent to contest for the 2024 election.
The former Trade Minister has withdrawn from the upcoming delegates congress for NPP in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 citing some challenges in the special delegates’ conference held on August 26, 2023.
Expressing his worry over the developments that have characterized the NPP’s internal elections, Mr. Kyerematen said “how did we get here as a party in the first place, and how far are we prepared to thread on this dangerous path to self-destruction?”
Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Monday the senior political science lecturer indicated that Mr. Kyerematen will be engaging in a fruitless venture if he should go independent in the 2024 election.
“For independent candidate it will be extremely difficult for him to win an election because Ghana is a two party tradition and where two parties exist the third force is not strong,” Dr. Asante stated.
He said independent candidates have not been an important variable in Ghana’s electoral equation.
“For that reason you will know that he has a difficulty there because of the strength of political parties in this country. Especially the two party system that we have in Ghana that has eclipsed all variables such as independent candidates phenomena and the rest of them.
“So if he wants to go on that target I’m afraid it is an impossible adventure. He won’t win, it will not help him. If he wants to move away and even join forces with other parties to become a third force which has some legal issues that also will not suffice,” Dr. Asante stated.
