The Best Journalist of the Year, Edward Adeti has stated that he had to apologize to his family over consistent threats on them because of his exposé on issues of national concern.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, after being awarded the Best Journalist of the Year, Adeti confessed that his profession has brought unwanted difficulties to his loved ones, forcing him to apologize for the consequences of his job choice.
“I’ve had to apologize to my family for my profession as a journalist.
“Of course, it’s been difficult and the other day I was talking to Al Jazeera and I said ‘In fact, there was a time I had to apologize to my family for choosing this job,’. I just had to apologize because it was like I had brought what they didn’t want upon them. It was like you are living in a cage bandage and everybody has to get inside before dark and caution. The children know there should be something to be afraid of around this”, he narrated.
Adeti also shared a poignant account of living under constant threat, describing his home as a “cage” where family members must exercise extreme caution.
“Just two months ago some faceless people came into my house again and stole my laptop. That happened after I went to the mining site.
“The other things they could have taken they didn’t take them. How come the laptop was taken? But I reported the matter to the police and they are handling it.”
Mr. Adeti also disclosed that even at 2 am there is a knock on his door, adding that a lot has happened to him that he does not want to go public on.
“It has been very tough and rough”, he added.
Edward Adeti, a writer with Media Without Borders, has been awarded the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year 2023 at the 28th GJA Media Awards held over the weekend.
Adeti’s investigative piece, “Stealing from the Sick,” uncovered the mystery behind drug shortages at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital and exposed a syndicate whose actions may have cost lives.
This groundbreaking work earned him the prestigious P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year award.
