A Burkinabe, Sulemana Kafado has been discharged unconditionally under the Justice for all Programme having been on prison remand for almost 7 years without trial at the Koforidua Prisons.
Kafado, a labourer and now 23, was admitted into Prison Custody on October 18, 2012, at age 17 and had since been on remand without trial though made two appearances in court.
None of the family members of Kafado knew his whereabouts since his detention. He was once granted bail but could not get anyone to stand as surety for him.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Clement Honyenugah, who is Chairman of Ghana Remand Review Taskforce, the body implementing the Justice for All Programme (JFAP) said the applicant had suffered enough in lawful custody, therefore, unconditionally discharged him and made an order to the Ghana Immigration Service to initiate processes for his deportation to reunite with his family.
Kafado was arrested by the Nkawkaw Police on June 27, 2012, and charged with murder for hitting the head of his friend with a stick over Ghc20 being money paid them after a day’s labourer work leading to his death.
