Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is deeply distressed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) recent characterization of him. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for due process in handling issues involving past government officials.
“Against any past government official, due process must be followed, and I am sure all of us will have peace,” Afenyo-Markin said. He assured Parliament that the Minority would extend the necessary courtesies to President Nana Akufo-Addo while maintaining their constitutional duty to oppose when necessary.
Addressing concerns about Ofori-Atta’s legal and health status, the Minority Leader revealed that he had engaged with the former minister earlier in the day.
“As of this morning, I had an extensive engagement with him. He is traumatized by the labeling of this adjective described to his person, but he still knows that his God is with him. He is undergoing some medical procedure,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin further disclosed that he had spoken with the Chief of Staff, who confirmed that Ofori-Atta had officially communicated regarding his receipt of the OSP’s letter. The Minority Leader assured Parliament that Ofori-Atta had left the country with proper authorization and would return to cooperate with any investigations.
“I will also engage the Office of the Special Prosecutor. I will engage Mr. Kenu Foriata. Engage constructively, assure him and his office that if there was any miscommunication, I, as a leader of my side, am assuring him that the man will make himself available… if there is anything that has to be investigated, he will make himself available,” Afenyo-Markin concluded.
