The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) impounded 22 commercial vehicles in an operation to enforce compliance reduction of transportation fares Kumasi on Wednesday, June 11.
The drivers were fined for charging unapproved transport fares. The enforcement operation aimed at restoring discipline within the city’s transport sector.
The operation, conducted by the KMA’s Transport Task Force, targeted drivers who failed to comply with a 15% reduction in transport fares announced by national transport unions and effective from May 24, 2025.
Randy Wilson, Head of Urban Transport at the KMA, confirmed that the drivers were arrested and their vehicles detained at the KMA premises.

He noted that offenders will be required to pay fines ranging from GH¢500 to GH¢1,500 before their vehicles are released, in accordance with the Assembly’s Special Exercise Fine approved on July 28, 2023.
The task force, composed of Metro Guards, Assembly Members, officials from the Department of Transport, and other security operatives, carried out the operation after receiving complaints and verifying reports of fare overcharges.
KMA had earlier issued a public notice on May 26, 2025, through its Public Relations Unit, warning commercial drivers to strictly adhere to the revised fare structure.
The statement reminded drivers that overcharging passengers constitutes a criminal offense punishable by law.
Mr. Wilson reiterated the Assembly’s resolve to enforce transport regulations impartially, emphasizing that the exercise was necessary to protect passengers from exploitation and ensure fairness in fare implementation.
“The KMA remains committed to promoting order, accountability, and sanity on Kumasi’s roads,” he said.
