The Koforidua District Court has concluded committal proceedings in the case of Vera Akosua Asare, a 25-year-old woman accused of killing her ex-boyfriend in an acid attack.
Vera has been charged with manslaughter and will stand trial at the Koforidua High Court on October 13, 2025.
During the committal hearing, she reportedly admitted guilt when the prosecution presented the facts of the case.
Dozens of relatives and sympathizers of the victim, 29-year-old Daniel Omane, thronged the court in solidarity, many wearing T-shirts printed with his image.
Omane, a mobile phone dealer in Koforidua, died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after months of treatment, including multiple skin graft surgeries.
He sustained severe burns in December 2024 when Vera allegedly poured acid on him while he slept. He was first treated at the Eastern Regional Hospital before being transferred to Accra for specialized care.
Police investigations revealed the couple had a strained relationship characterized by frequent quarrels and accusations of infidelity.
Vera, who had been living with Omane after the birth of their now two-year-old daughter, was known to publicly confront women she suspected of being involved with him.
According to investigators, Vera allegedly attacked Omane in his sleep shortly after he ended their relationship. His screams alerted co-tenants, who rushed to his aid and handed her over to police.
Vera was initially remanded but later granted bail to enable her care for their child. Following Omane’s death, police amended the charges from causing harm to manslaughter.
The case is now being prosecuted by Eastern Regional State Attorney, Emily Addo-Kyereh, with investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitting an autopsy report from Korle Bu to support the prosecution.
