First-year House Officers working at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have threatened to suspend their services over delayed allowances, urging the Management to settle arrears owed them amidst tough economic conditions they have been enduring.
The health officers in a letter addressed to the Director of Medical Affairs bemoaned the difficulty in affording basic necessities for themselves even as they struggled to keep up with the cost of transportation.
“While we understand the demands and challenges of this profession, it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue our duties without the necessary financial support.
“Our resources are now severely depleted, and basic necessities such as food and water are becoming unaffordable. Some of us cannot even transport ourselves to work. As such, we are unable to sustain ourselves and, by extension, our ability to provide the level of care that our patients deserve,” the health workers wrote in part.
They have called for a meeting with the hospital management to order to afford them the opportunity to channel their grievances, with the goal of “working together to find a prompt solution” to the matter.
The doctors were convinced that break down in talks in dealing with the issue will cause them to suspend their services from November 12, 2024.
