The dialysis unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been closed for almost two weeks, resulting in the loss of three lives.
Dr. Sebastian Sandari, a Member of Parliament and health committee member has expressed his concerns and frustrations about the situation.
“The management body has failed to ensure that the unit functions and patients receive the best healthcare. Failure to do that means they are not doing their work properly,” Dr. Sandari said.
He emphasized that the management’s inability to provide resources and communicate with stakeholders is unacceptable. “If they don’t have the resources, they should speak up. They shouldn’t be silent and close down the place without the attention of stakeholders.”
Dr. Sandari also suggested that the management and ministry should be summoned before the health committee to answer questions. “It’s not out of place to sanction the management and ministry to appear before the health committee to answer questions.”
He also highlighted the government’s failure to address the health concerns of citizens, stating, “This also points out to the bad faith of the government in addressing the health concerns of the citizenry.”
The closure of the dialysis unit has left kidney patients unable to afford private facilities, with prices ranging from 600 to 1,200 Ghana cedis per session.
Dr. Sandari’s comments emphasize the need for urgent action to address the situation and ensure that citizens receive the healthcare they deserve.
