The Kotoka International Airport (KIA) will be renamed Accra International Airport in the coming days, as the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga announced, signalling the government’s push for legislative changes in Parliament.
This follows calls from sections of the public and civil society groups who argue that the current name does not reflect the country’s democratic ideals.
Addressing the media briefing ahead of the resumption of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Mr. Ayariga revealed that the renaming would be formalized through a bill to be presented by the Minister for Transport.
“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. A bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport for the name to be changed,” he stated.
Mr. Ayariga further said that the name change forms part of a broader legislative agenda expected in the new parliamentary session.
Parliament is expected to deliberate on the proposed airport name change alongside the transport-related bills as part of its legislative agenda for the new session.
