The Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has revealed that the planned by-election for his seat would have been particularly difficult, had it proceeded, following the declaration of his seat as vacant during his legal battle.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Serwaa Amihere, Nyindam explained that unlike other MPs who are often allowed to exhaust the legal process before losing their seats, his case was handled differently.
“Most of the time when issues like this come, they give you the opportunity to exhaust the entire process before your seat is declared vacant. But unfortunately, in my case, I didn’t get it and straight away my seat was declared vacant,” he said.
He highlighted that preparations for the by-election had already begun, with the Electoral Commission setting a date of December 30 and party machinery already in place.
“In my case, the Electoral Commissioner had fixed a date for elections on the 30th of December. All preparations were done and my opponent was on the field. Party machinery and government machinery were on the field. What will you do? You also have to start preparing,” he stated.
Nyindam acknowledged the difficulty of running such an election. “It was going to be a very difficult election for me because it was not a normal election. You’re going to run elections with the state and the people,” he admitted.
The Supreme Court’s 4–1 verdict in his favour has since ended the legal dispute, allowing him to retain his seat. Nyindam reiterated his commitment to focusing on serving the people of Kpandai and moving beyond the court case.
