Kufuor lost statesman status when he endorsed Bawumia – Solomon Owusu

A senior to Alan Kyerematen, Solomon Owusu says former President John Agyekum Kufuor missed a diming opportunity to be a national icon revered by all sides of the political divide when he threw his support behind the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over the weekend.

In an interview aired on GHOne TV, former President Kufuor touted Dr. Bawumia as the best candidate to lift the country from its economic doldrums, urging the Ghanaian electorate to elect him president.

However, the former president has come under intense criticism following his endorsement of a man to whom many political opponents attribute the current difficulty.

The latest of these responses on Mr. Kufuor has been coming from the Alan Kyerematen Campaign which has hit the former president hard on his support of the NPP presidential candidate.

A senior aide to Alan Kyerematen, Solomon Owusu speaking on Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso said the 2nd President of the 4th Republic would have been better served if he had not gotten involved in the race.

“Kufuor lost the opportunity of being father of the nation last Sunday when he decided to go that tangent. Now he has reduced himself. We are fully aware that when you look at the NPP campaign structure, he is supposed to be an advisor to the candidate, we are aware of that so in one breadth you want to satisfy one political party, in another breadth you want us to see you as a stateman.

“Sunday’s activity, I view it as a party activity and if you reduce yourself to party politics then we will analyze you in that vein. So clearly he lost the opportunity of being father of the state,” Mr. Owusu said on Morning Starr this morning.

He explained the nation currently had two former presidents who could be consulted in times of crisis to lower the temperature and since former President Mahama was actively participating in the election, it fell to Mr. Kufuor to be that trusted mediator.
