The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ledzokuku, Israel Adjetey Otchwenmah, has spearheaded the demolition of an unauthorized billboard at the Flowerpot Interchange in Accra.
The exercise, carried out by the assembly, was done ahead of a directive from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, which later confirmed that the billboard had been erected without approval and violated national advertising and road safety regulations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, the Ministry explained that the structure failed to comply with Section 5 of the Ghana Standards Authority’s “Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs” (GS 847:2019), Sections 11 and 15 of the Advertisements Act (Act 540), and Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
The Ministry subsequently ordered the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly and the Department of Urban Roads to ensure the removal of all unauthorized billboards at the interchange.
It also raised alarm over the increasing installation of unapproved outdoor structures, describing them as illegal, unconstitutional, and a threat to public safety.
The Ministry further cited a press release from the Students Loan Trust Fund, which disassociated itself from the billboard and warned against the misuse of its logo.
Calling for stricter oversight, the Ministry urged all assemblies to work closely with regional road agencies before issuing permits for advertisements along road corridors.
It also appealed to the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct, reiterating its commitment to road safety and the protection of public infrastructure.
